To address much-needed improvements to the Administration Building Wi-Fi network, the Metropolitan State University of Denver Information Technology Services Networking team has devised a partial upgrade solution that does not require a full outage or building closure. This partial solution would provide immediate Wi-Fi improvements until the team can perform the full upgrade during Fall Break. Wireless internet and phones will remain operational throughout the upgrade.
“The network in the Administration Building is causing problems for many departments, and an immediate improvement is needed before the fall semester, as the upgrade scheduled for May was canceled due to campus protests,” said Darius Jack, director of Network and Infrastructure Services.
Project details
Now rescheduled for the weekend of June 22-23, this partial upgrade was strategically planned to minimize disruption to campus operations while enhancing the faculty, staff and student working and learning experiences with more reliable and faster Wi-Fi. These benefits will be fully realized when the team can replace switches during Fall Break. A much longer outage and closure will be necessary for that phase, and details will be available closer to fall.
Anticipated impacts
- The Administration Building will undergo upgrades June 22-23 across all floors.
- While the building will not be closed, MSU Denver employees should avoid working in the Administration Building during that weekend.
- All supervisors with teams that work in the building should inform their direct reports of the project and its impacts.
- Wireless internet will be unavailable June 22-23, but wired internet and phones will be operational.
- Wired and wireless internet and phones will be fully operational June 24.
More about the Network Modernization Initiative
When complete, the Network Modernization Initiative will improve MSU Denver’s network and wireless environments across campus by addressing issues with deferred maintenance and outdated network infrastructure. This project will replace wireless access points and edge/access and distribution-layer switches in multiple buildings across campus. These improvements will provide a more robust and stable network environment capable of supporting the University’s evolving needs in a scalable and secure manner.
